Remedy Spiced Rum | Born during the Prohibition
The history of Remedy Spiced Rum begins in the United States of America of the 1920s. In an era characterized by wealth, by wild and excessive parties, but also by the Prohibition. From 1920 to 1933, it was prohibited in all of the US to produce and/or sell alcohol. But of course, people found ways and means to get their hands on alcohol. Drug stores and pharmacies were one possibility, as they were permitted to sell spirits for “medicinal purposes” on prescription. This, however, led to a whole new business line of illegally smuggled alcohol procured from pharmacies. The recipe for the Remedy Spiced Rum was conceived 1922 in Farrington’s Drugstore, a pharmacy in New York.
The alchemist Frank M. Farrington was renowned for supplying his customers with exquisite spirits. In order to make the rum’s taste even more complex, the alchemist added carefully selected spices to the recipe. For these experiments, he relied on rum casks procured from Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, and Dominican Republic. He added precious spices such as vanilla, orange peel, and cinnamon.
For over a decade, the Remedy Spiced Rum reigned in the bars. Everyone in the secret pubs and clubs loved using it in cocktails. The end of the Prohibition in 1933, however, meant that hardly any spirits were sold in high quantities in pharmacies anymore. This led to a decline in popularity during the following years, until the Remedy Spiced Rum had almost been forgotten. But today, it has been resurrected and it’s available in Germany.
