Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah
Rust en Vrede is among the most historical estates in South Africa, established by Simon Van der Stel in 1694. The beautiful Cape Dutch buildings, dating back to 1780, all have a National Monument status. As of late, the estate is owned by Jean Engelbrecht. The vineyards are located in a warmer microcosm of the Helderberg mountain area, making them very well suited to ripening black grape varieties. As such, the point of interest could be very much on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, and the wines continue to move from strength to strength.
Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah has dark, wealthy fruit and intense floral perfume that jumps out of the glass. Complex aromas of violets and white blossoms combine with concentrated blueberry, vanilla, and dark chocolate. The wine has a bold, full palate as wealthy as the nose promises – intense blackberry and blueberry layered with dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and toast. Partial whole-bunch fermentation adds a savoury spiciness, and energetic acidity balances the robust tannins, giving power and structure to the wine.
